Most probably, the town of Razgrad was built over the ruins of the medieval Bulgarian settlement called "Hrusgrad" from which derives the name of the contemporary town. In Razgrad there are the second largest mosque in Bulgaria- "Ibrahim Pasha" built in XVIth c. A. D., the church "St. Nicholas the Thaumaturge" built in 1860, and the Clock Tower which dates back from 1864. |

Historical museum Razgrad has a permanent archeological exhibition arranged in a hall situated in the main building of Museum "Abritus", open and covered lapidarium and a peristyle complex from ІV -th c. A. D. The exponents presented in the exhibition hall are gathered thematically in several groups thus aiming to trace back the development of human society through the paleolith, neolith, eneolith, the Thracian antiquity and Middle Ages. Archeological points of interest for visitors are: fortified wall, a peristyle complex and a residence of a high- ranking state's magistrate, an early- Christian tree nef basilica. The ethnographical exposition is dedicated to the traditional culture and style of living of the local ethnographical group called "kapantzi". |

During 1887 Ananie Ivanov Yavashov, who was an eminent teacher and inspector in Science (leater an academician in the field of natural science), started the archeological excavations in the western part of the Hisarlaka area. During the same year, Yavashov arranged a museum collection with the finds from the excavations in the old building of the Razgrad's secondary school for boys. On the 19-th of March 1922, a general meeting of patriotic Bulgarians was gathered in the school "St. st. Cyril ahd Methodi," which established Razgrad`s Archeological Society aiming to discover, preserve, investigate, and popularize the antiques from Razgrad and the nearby district. |
