The History Museum of Sofia was arranged in Sofia after its proclamation for the capital of Bulgaria. The museum had 5 major changes through its history.
In 1941 the first permanent exhibition was organized in a building (Address: Banski Square No. 3) that was bought by the Sofia Municipality. This exhibition was placed in several halls, and it represented themes such as ethnography of Sofia, its town-planning and town development after the Liberation. The building was destroyed by the bomb raids in 1944. Two years later the Museum restored its activities.
The museum has functioned as an independent cultural institution under the name History Museum of Sofia since 1952. In 1959 a triangular tower, a part of the fortification of the ancient city, was unearthed during the underground construction beneath a building at the corner of "Kniaginia Maria Luisa" Blvd. and "Excharch Joseph" St. Sofia Municipality made a decision to arrange the permanent exhibition of the Museum at this place. However, because of many obstacles, this decision stayed unrealized.
Since 1952 the museum has actively carried out collection of artifacts and research work, and it has organized more than 100 exhibitions in and outside Bulgaria. |
