The museum offers exhibitions in three fields- archaeology, ethnography, and general history. They are in eight halls. The archaeology exhibition shows prehistoric exhibits. The ethnography represents urban and village life in the region. The general historical exhibition displays development of the city from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century.

The museum opened on 26-th January 1973 as a collection in the community centre "Otetz Paisii". The first organizer and arranger of the museum was Petar Bratovanov- functionary and teacher.
In 1987 the museum was disposed of other two buildings and started to take a form of architectural complex. Since 1994 museum collection has been transformed into Historical museum with a prime objective: the full and ample investigation to the historical past of Omurtag city and its region. |
