Town Information

Hissarja is rich in history. It has been a spa resort since antiquity. There are well-equipped hotels for treatment. Starosel Village is 20 km from Hissarja; the village is famous for its Thracian cult complex.

Exhibits of the mueum are arranged in five halls, lapidarium and gardens. Exhibits from the Neolithic and Thracian periods and antiquity are on display. The Roman fortress wall, Emperor's residence, thermal baths, amphitheater, peristyle building, basilicas, and tomb can be visited in the archaeological preserve that is within town. The ethnographic exhibition acquaints visitors with the lifestyle of the people from this region. Some instruments, costumes, vessels and decorations are also on display.

Year of Establishment 1953
Founder General Todor Markov

In 1933, an archaeological society was established in Hissarja. Its aim was to preserve monuments of culture in the town. General Todor Markov was elected as Chairman. He arranged an archaeological exhibition in his own villa. After some years, he donated this collection to the town. In 1953, the Archaeological Museum in Hissarja was established. A scientific group undertook archaeological excavations. Some houses, baths and an impressive fortress wall from Roman period were revealed during excavations. In 1955, the museum moved into the present building. In 1976, an ethnographic section, which depicts the lifestyle of this region, was created.
