| The museum is situated some 8 km from the centre of Gabrovo. There's a convenient town regular transport-bus №1 to the quarter Etar and bus line "Rusevtsi-Elovitsa". |

The region of Gabrovo is situated in the north central part of the Balkan Range. Its whole territory is 2,045 sq. km. It comprises 356 populated settlements, administrated in four municipalities Gabrovo, Dryanovo, Sevlievo, and Tryavna. Besides Etara museum tourists can visit the Apriliv High-school, Dechkova House, Architectural and Historical Reserve "Bozhentsi", Town Historical Museum, and etc. |

• Old-time technical equipments, powered by water By diverted mill-stream, the water of the river Sivek drives one after another ten equipments: mechanical whetstone, two water mills, two nap-raising mills, a fulling-mill, lathes for wooden articles, braid-making room, and a saw-mill.
• Craftsman's market street It represents an ensemble of residential buildings with premises for craftsman-commercial activity. Represented sixteen architectural examples reveal the diversity of the Bulgarian revival architecture. Today, the following crafts are presented in Etar's artisan's street-bakery trade, shoe-making, weaving of articles out of wool and goat's hair, making of sugar sweets, coppersmith's and silversmith's trades, pottery, tannery, cart-smithery, wood-carving and icon painting, make of folk musical instruments, walnut oil production, cow-bell making, furriery, and braid-making.

The first and the only of the "skansen" (in the open air) type museum was established in 1964 by the Gabrovian Lazar Donkov. The museum represents Revival houses with craftsmen' workshops, old-time technical equipments, powered by water and sites of social importance.
The craftsmen at the museum produce their works of art and sell them in the workshops. They work with original tools and observe the traditional technology.
Old Bulgarian customs, traditional folklore songs and dances enliven the museum on specific days. Palm Sunday, St. Lazar's Day, St. George's Day, the Fair of Traditional Crafts are part of the cultural calendar of Gabrovo. Besides restorations of old traditional home activities and ritual are organized and realised in the exhibition area of the museum. Everyone who wishes can be trained in old home activities.
Besides a place for gaining knowledge Etara is also a place for recreation.The complex offers to its visitors the facilities of the "Strannopriemnitsa" hotel. |
