The House Museum- "Dimiter Peshev" has one of the largest collections of materials and written documents connected with the salvation and the savers of the Bulgarian Jewish people. The exhibition starts with an introduction revealing the foundation on the spirit of tolerance and ethnic and racial equality, which Bulgaria as a country is based on since 1878. The first theme follows Dimiter Peshev`s life- his family background, education, service in the Bulgarian army, and participation in the wars for National Union, and graduation in law and professional realization as a judge and a lawyer. The second theme covers the period of the Bulgarian anti-Semitic policy (1941-1944) after the imposition by Hitler of Germany along with the discussions on acceptance of the Law for Protection of the Nation. The emphasis is given on the events after the agreement between the commissioner for Jewish issue A. Belev and German politician T. Denker signing on deportation of 20,000 Jewish people. The third theme focuses on the life of the Kyustendil representatives after March 1943, such as their different fates, social oblivion, and the gradual recognition that came at first from some Jewish followed by the State of Israel, then by Bulgaria after 1990, and also by various societies and states around the world. |

The House Museum “Dimitar Peshev” was built after a project realized by Kyustendil Municipality and his Majesty Ambassador of State Israel in Bulgaria Emanuel Zissman. It was financed by Union of Bulgarian Jews in Israel. Adapted in the town center, it is a precise reconstruction of the native house of Demetar Peshev. Specialists of the Regional Historic Museum- Kyustendil did a research and gathered information on the activities of the Kyustendil citizens saving Bulgarian Jewish from the Nazi death camps. For several months materials were photographed from the archives of institutions in the Republic of Bulgaria: Central State Archive, Ministry of Home Policy's Archive, Scientific Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of S ciences, Central Military Archive- Veliko Turnovo, and State Archive-Kyustendil. With the help of the Parliament direction and employees, a reconstruction of the office during the 1940s was arranged. After meetings with the heirs of those Kyustendil citizens who have participated in the delegation for saving the Bulgarian Jews, for instance Dimitar Peshev's niece Kaluda Kiardjieva, a significant quantity of personal belongings were endowed for the permanent exposition at the museum.
