The museum's exposition begins with archeological finds dated from the Neolithic period until the late Middle Ages. In the five halls of the main building, the visitor can trace through events and long-lasting processes showing the very important place of Chiprovtsi in the Bulgarian and/or world historical development. The halls are:

• 1st hall
The visitor can see the development of the mining industry in the region during the centuries.
• 2nd hall
This hall is devoted to the Chiprovtsi school of goldsmith (16th-17th C).
• 3rd hall
Exponents of different kind show the many-sided role of Catholicism in the life of the local population during the 17th Century.
• 4th hall
Basic stages in the development of the local carpet industry are presented (from its beginning in the middle of 18th Century till nowadays).
• 5th hall
Patterns of a church art of painting are exhibited.

A special ethnographic exposition presenting the Torlaks' way of life is arranged in the Katerina House. Also, there is "a living collection of tinctorial plants" in the yard of this house.

Chiprovtsi's Day
Year of Establishment 1988
Founder Municipality of Chiprovtsi

The museum was founded at accelerated rates in connection with the official national celebration of important anniversary – 300 years from the outburst of the so called Chiprovtsi uprising. Today's museum funds have different real sources – the museum collection of the local community center “Petar Bogdan”; the finds of archaeological excavations from the town's Historical hill, museum's specialists' collective activity.

The basic museum exposition is situated in the first school building of Chiprovtsi. The school building itself has been built in the end of 19th century. At the end of the 1980, the building has been reconstructed for museum's needs. The whole museum complex was formed in the beginning of 1990. The main constituent parts of the complex (except the exposition building listed above) are both restored houses from the period of the Bulgarian national revival (Katerina House and Punkova House), the remains of the Catholic cathedral “Sancta Maria” and the building of the “old municipality.” The administrative premises of the museum are in this building of the “old municipality.”
